Things to do: Walking Routes in the Lakes

Over many years, the Lake District has been voted the walker's favourite UK destination and there is no better way to appreciate its spectacular lake, valley and mountain views than on foot. We have walking routes suitable for all abilities, from challenging fell walks to beautiful short walks which are perfect for family strolls. Most routes are easily accessible from major tourist centres via regular public transport services. If you are new to the area and want to get the most out of your stay, Cumbria Tourist Guides offer walks specifically geared to your own ability and interests, bringing to life the rich history and literary associations of this magnificent landscape.

We have tried to categorise the walks listed here as 'Hard', 'Mid' and 'Easy' to give you some guidance on what to expect from the route. However, ability will differ according to individuals so ask for local advice at your hotel, at a visitor attraction or at a tourist information centre.
